Matthew Sacks, Ph.D.

Matthew joined atai in 2021. He has over 20 years of experience in the field of psychology, with a specialization in the dissemination and implementation of evidenced-based psychotherapies. Prior to atai, Dr. Sacks worked with populations ranging from United Stated Special Operations personnel to professional teams and athletes.

Dr. Sacks was originally trained and has continued to practice from a primarily Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy orientation, focusing on the treatment of depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder, and substance use disorders. He earned his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, interned at the Palo Alto Veterans Affairs Health Care System, and was a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Substance Abuse at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Dr. Sacks developed a specialization in working with military populations while serving as the Deputy Chief of the Resiliency Element at Joint Base Andrews, providing mental health briefings for United States Department of Defense (DoD) organizations throughout the National Capitol Region. Dr. Sacks went on to join the Center for Deployment Psychology (CDP), attached to the DoD’s Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. His roles at CDP included: Assistant Director of Strategic Growth, Assistant Director of Online Programs, and Deployment Behavioral Health Psychologist.

Dr. Sacks has served in various teaching and leadership roles in secondary education, is the Coordinator of Clinical Services at the Center for Athletic Performance Enhancement, and is the Mental Health Advisor for the Florida Panthers Warriors, a non-profit organization that supports military veterans to play ice hockey in a supportive, therapeutic environment
